Women's T20 Challenge likely to be postponed: BCCI sources

Women's T20 Challenge likely to be postponed

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to postpone the 2021 Women's T20 Challenge amid the rising coronavirus cases in the country and the unavailability of foreign players due to air travel restrictions.

Although there is no official news yet, the sources from ESPNCricinfo have reported that the board will have to face logistical challenges in order to fly overseas stars from countries like England, Australia, South Africa, the West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Usually, the Women's T20 Challenge takes place during the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs stage but it wasn't possible this year due to the coronavirus surge in the country. As some of the highly-rated IPL stars have also pulled out midway, the BCCI officials agree that it is 'highly unlikely' for women's tournament to take place.

The United Kingdom (UK) has put India on its travel red list and Australia has also suspended all direct flights for a couple of weeks.

Last year, the tournament was held in Sharjah but many Australian and England players missed out due to a clash with Big Bash League and other tournaments. However, some renowned names including Deandra Dottin, Sune Luus, Danielle Wyatt, and Nathakan Chantham, featured in the three-team tournament.
